McDonald's has been hurling itself into the limelight lately — by crafting a burger ATM, giving away bottles of its top-secret Big Mac sauce, and (finally) working on mobile ordering. It's latest attempt to remain relevant, however, seems off.
In a new ad for the Golden Arches actress Mindy Kaling stands in front of a red backdrop wearing a yellow dress. During two 30-second spots, she never says "McDonald's." Ever. Instead, Kaling name-drops Coca-Cola and Google. Hmm. Why?
The simple answer is that the company wants you to literally Google search for "that place where Coke tastes SO good." But just how effective is that? Will anyone even do it?
Adweek describes this tactic as a "sly campaign" and the New York Times explained that it was created to target "teens and twentysomethings, who prefer word-of-mouth and their own research about products and brands."
Apparently neither of the clips will be posted on any of Mickey D's social channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube; though Kaling posted one of the videos to her own account.
We're still not sure how we feel, so tell us what you think about the odd, "brand-less" commercials.
